What does the 925 stamp on my silver jewelry mean?
Pure 999 silver is too soft to create jewelry. If silver jewelry was made with 100% pure silver it would scratch and bend too easily and would simply not be durable enough to become long lasting jewelry.
So jewelers use a blend of pure silver and other alloys like copper in order to fortify the silver and make it strong enough for jewelry. Sneaky Bird creates our own signature blend in-house that we use in all of our silver pieces. Making this blend ourself in-house instead of outsourcing it or buying a commercial blend allows us full quality control.
Sterling silver is made up of 92.5% pure silver combined with 7.5% copper or other alloy to create the 100% perfect blend for jewelry. When the silver content of the blend is at least 92.5% it can be called "sterling silver." When jewelry pieces are marked with a 925 stamp it is the jeweler's guarantee that the piece consists of a minimum 92.5% silver content.
Sneaky Bird silver pieces are all guaranteed 925 silver which is considered the industry standard of high quality but still durable enough for everyday use. We choose to use 925 silver because our mission is to design jewelry that can be a future heirloom for the next generation and can last a lifetime.
925 silver also has the benefit of being hypoallergenic. Because the blend is composed of such a high quantity of pure silver, 925 silver is considered safe for most people with skin sensitivities. Sneaky Bird 925 sterling silver is proud to be 100% nickel-free.
